Sure, they could put an HDMI port on there and provide adapters to go to DVI/VGA, but then you're back in pretty much the same boat, except you've sacrificed a bunch of space, cost, licensing fees, and resolution capability just so SOME of your customers don't have to get an adapter.Īpple made the call, and IMHO it's the right one.
For computer monitors or projectors you want VGA/DVI. Sure a lot of monitors support it, a lot don't also. Licensing: Displayport is an open standard, HDMI costs moneyīasically, HDMI is only really good for connecting to TV's. Plus, HDMI doesn't push as high resolutions as displayport, you need dual-link-dvi to push their 27"/30" cinema displays, which displayport can handle It's just more efficient, cost-wise and space-wise. Versatility: It can output to VGA, DVI, Dual-Link DVI or HDMI as needed without having to have 3 different ports on the laptop.
